Licensing

The BSCW system can be licensed from OrbiTeam using one of two models:

 

BSCW-Hosting:

  

In-house server:

BSCW hosting is a particularly attractive alternative for small workgroups, enabling them to take advantage of full groupware functionality without investing in their own IT infrastructure. With this option, the customer's BSCW software resides on a server hosted and maintained by OrbiTeam.

 

A suitable option for larger workgroups is the installation of the BSCW software on an in-house server. The customer is responsible for operating and maintaining the software.


In principle, customers can either outsource the operation of the BSCW server to OrbiTeam or set up their own in-house BSCW server. With the in-house option, the BSCW system resides within the enterprise network (or a third-party provider network). If you choose to outsource the BSCW solution to OrbiTeam, access to the BSCW-hosted server occurs via the Internet.

Should I operate my own BSCW server?

Buy or rent? This decision can only be made as part of a consultation with OrbiTeam that takes into consideration your company's unique requirements. As an overall guide however, the following pros and cons apply:

Hosted ASP:

  • For companies without access to an internal server and therefore no capability to operate their own BSCW server, hosting is a reasonable solution because it guarantees immediate access, a predictable cost structure and minimal technical requirements.  
  •  A hosted solution can also make sense for projects with only few members  or short duration. This approach may be significantly more cost effective than purchasing a licence and operating your own server since the costs boil down to a fixed monthly fee for the BSCW system plus your Internet access costs.
  • For enterprise-wide projects that involve different external partners, a hosting solution can also offer clear cost advantages, in particular because none of the project partners need operate their own Internet server.

Operating your own server:

  • With an own IT infrastructure in house (in your company or organization) operating your own server is a good choice. Especially if the BSCW server software can be deployed on an existing corporate server the purchase of a BSCW server licence offers some cost advantages over a hosted solution.
  • Operating your own server also allows customization of the software according to your requirements. This also includes integration in an existing IT infrastructure (e.g. LDAP or SSO).
